Is this Really the Best Tool for Sizing Systems for Commercial Workloads? January 13, 2011,
Volume 155, Issue 2
Is SPECint the best tool for sizing a system for commercial workloads ... or not? Joerg Moellenkamp takes up the question (and takes on proponents of the benchmark) in his blog post On benchmarks, sizing and about a number of comments. Moellenkamp's readers will be aware of the number of comments his blogs have begun to attract, some of them heated, and will want to see how he deals with them. His concluding comment provides a clue to the tone of his remarks throughout: "IBM (and their fans) may brag about their SAP-SD or SPECint result as much as they want. I leave them that joy. However ... the relevance of this in the real world is limited. And that's the whole point of this article. Choose your benchmark on your own and wisely when you need one to size the system."
