The Sun BestPerf blog Transparent Failover with Solaris MPxIO and Oracle ASM is a report by Akiko Marti on configuring failover with Solaris MPxIO (Multipathing), Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM) and the Oracle Sun Storage 6180 Array, in which configuration failover was completely transparent to the Oracle database.
Marti writes that multipathing generates a pseudo device, and by providing Oracle ASM a pseudo device name at ASM diskgroup creation it makes failover transparent to the Oracle database. The Sun Storage 6180 array configuration in this configuration, Marti reports, had two controllers and each controller was connected to a different adapter on the host for redundant path.
The author outlines the sequence of steps that occur when one of the paths fails, contending that the failover is transparent to the Oracle database, and not even an error or message is displayed in Oracle log files during this period.
Marti reviews the configuration aspects for creating two physical paths for the Oracle Sun Storage 6180 array, one controller being connected to one of the HBAs on the host and the other connected to the other HBA.
The author shows how to enable MPxIO and how to debug if necessary using the map that displays following "format." Next, the author shows how one goes about creating an ASM diskgroup and initializing it.
Finally, the blog displays the system messages from failover that appear when one of the paths fails at the array side.
Code is provided throughout to illustrate the author's points.
