References to the release of Solaris 10 9/10 have been evident since Spring. From blogs to technical articles, information naming the release has been documented.
Most recently, Oracle Executive Vice President for Server and Storage Systems John Fowler mentioned on Aug. 10 that updates are expected for the OS ahead of the Solaris 11 release, which is projected to be available sometime next year. Additionally, release notes for the M3000 XCP1093 (login required), as noticed by others, have also alluded to the Solaris 10 9/10.
This article focuses on the ossadm command-line interface (CLI) system administrators will be able to use to manage diskless clients on both the SPARC and x86 platforms in the upcoming OS.
Juanita Heieck penned the piece. She explains that this feature is being made available as a patch prior to the official release of the Oracle Solaris 10 9/10 OS. An existing service contract is required to access the patch.
The command itself is interoperable with commands often used for managing diskless clients in Solaris - smosservice and smdiskless.
Heick relates the two modes of operation for the ossadm command are:
- osservice mode: used to administer OS instances on an OS server
- diskless mode: used to manage diskless operations on client systems
Superuser status is required at this time to administer diskless clients by using the ossadm command.
ossadm CLI functions currently supported:
- Adding OS services
- Removing OS services
- Listing OS services
- Adding diskless clients
- Removing diskless clients
- Listing diskless clients
In Heick's article, readers will receive instruction on downloading and installing the ossadm patch as well as key points to consider when managing diskless clients by using the ossadm command. She also describes the necessary preparations for adding diskless clients in a GRUB-based boot environment and in the Oracle Solaris 10.
