Roddy Rodstein's underground manual on Oracle's server virtualization software, Oracle VM, has a few additions since we last covered it in February. The most recent chapter update is theOracle VM Manager Sizing and Installation where Rodstein introduces the stand-alone management solution and details its resource requirements, installation prerequisites, and installation instructions.
Rodstein, who is a member of the Virtualization and Linux team at Oracle, describes the Oracle VM Manager as a private, source cluster-ready Oracle Application Development Framework 10g (ADF) application that installs on Enterprise Linux (Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 update 5 or later; Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 or later). It is for Oracle VM servers, Oracle VM server pools, and Oracle VM guests. It has a command line interface that allows Oracle VM Manager administrative functions to be perform from the command line or executed using scripts.
The recommended resource requirements are 2 GB of memory and one 1.83 GHz CPU for VM Manager 2.x. Rodstein advises that Oracle's minimum resource recommendations for VM Manager 2.x is appropriate for a small Oracle VM pool with a hand full of Oracle VM servers.
Detailed information is provided on libaio RPM package, name resolution, host firewall and port test, SMTP server, and Oracle VM Manager guest console. Rodstein also discusses the required installation passwords and password complexity requirements.
