The Solaris OS CPU is an archived snapshot of the Solaris OS Recommended Patch Cluster.

As part of Oracle, the Solaris Operating System is now on the company's quarterly Critical Patch Updates (CPUs) release scheduled, writes Gerry Haskins, director, Software Patch Services. Therefore, with the July 2010 Oracle CPU, the Solaris OS CPUs also have been made available. Haskins clarifies what this new patching schedule under Oracle means for Solaris users, including Solaris 8 OS customers, in a recent entry made to his Patch Corner blog.

Solaris OS users should understand that bug fixes for the platform will continue to be made and released as soon as possible, Haskins points out, noting any fixes will be included in the Recommended Solaris OS Patch Clusters as soon as they become available, just as they were before the Oracle acquisition.

"The Solaris OS CPU simply provides another archived patch collation option for customers," offers Haskins, who defines the Solaris OS CPU as an archived snapshot of the Solaris OS Recommended Patch Cluster.

In terms of the July 2010 CPUs, these were created on July 6 and released on July 13. Sign in to the Oracle SunSolve site to view specific details on these updates.

Haskins also addresses several questions in the comments section of this blog entry. He explains the CPU releases and how it relates to customers patching via the xref. He further explains the best way to use the PatchFinder tool to help customers identify the security fixes.

Additionally, in the blog entry itself, Haskins reminds Solaris 8 users that this version of the OS is in Vintage support so no patch clusters have been released. However, Solaris 8 patches which were released in the last quarter are listed on SunSolve. A Solaris 8 Vintage support contract is needed to access some of them.

The next Oracle CPU advisory is expected to be published in October 2010.
