Oracle and Sun Websites to Complete Migration of Some Developer, SysAdmin Sites
java.sun.com, developers.sun.com, BigAdmin Moving to OTN

Major changes to the developer and admin-related Web portals maintained by Oracle to take place

Oracle is anticipating it will complete migration of relevant content from developers.sun.com, java.sun.com, and BigAdmin to the Oracle Technology Network (OTN) site on July 19. The OTN site is set up with different entry points for Java Developers, Database Admins and Developers, System Admins and Developers, and Architects so specific information related to each of these types of users can be accessed readily. Oracle states that it is attempting to preserve the familiar information architecture of Sun's sites to facilitate ease of use for Java and Sun users.

According to the FAQ page on this migration, docs.sun.com will remain for the foreseeable future.

Users of these Sun-related sites will need to become an Oracle Technology Network member, which is free. Membership entitles users to free software downloads under the Oracle Technology Network Developer license, read/write access to Oracle Discussion Forums, and a selection of monthly developer newsletters requiring interested readers to opt-in.

For those with a Sun.com identity, Oracle instructs to await communications from the company related to this process.

Some other changes users should make note of:

  • Oracle will implement 1:1 redirects for the most popular and important content (such as Java APIs). For other content, folder-level redirects will be available, so instances of 404s should be uncommon. Furthermore, domain-level URLs (e.g., java.sun.com) will continue to work.

  • No change is planned in the content strategy for supporting Java developers in a technology-focused manner. For Oracle-specific development and deployment options, product pages will also be available.

  • Integration of forums, blogs, and wikis are on a different timeline. The company plans on reporting on their status as soon as appropriate.

To relay any issues that emerge from this integration process, users are advised to post the information on the Community Feedback Discussion Forum (registration required). "Yes, there may be some rough edges for a while," the company states, "but we are committed to an ongoing process of continuing improvement."
