The Oracle Management Connector for Ops Center enables users to view event information in the Oracle Enterprise Manager console. With the Connector, Ops Center notifications are displayed as Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control alerts. "This software allows customers to connect an instance of Ops Center to an instance of Oracle Enterprise Manager's grid control server and connect the event streams of the two products," writes Systems Management VP Steve Wilson, "allowing for new levels of visibility into the customer's systems when using the combination of Oracle and Sun technology."
Beginning with Enterprise Manager 10g Release 5, users can retrieve Ops Center notifications and display them in Enterprise Manager as alerts in real time through Web services. Retrieved alerts are stored in the Enterprise Manager repository and displayed through the Enterprise Manager console. In this release the data flow is one way, from Ops Center to the Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control.
Ops Center notifications dealing with hardware fault information, operating system performance, Ops Center framework occurrences, and many other infrastructure events become Oracle Enterprise Manager alarms. Once in the Oracle Enterprise Manager console, these events can be treated as native Oracle Enterprise Manager alarms.
This is beneficial to DBAs who no longer need to guess how infrastructure layers running their database are behaving when investigating database performance issues or service downtime issues. Benefits of such an integration include faster resolution times, more immediate root cause analysis, and faster communication flow between IT departments.
The Ops Center Connector retrieves data through Web services on HTTPS protocols via a polling mechanism. The polling interval is user-definable, but cannot be shorter than five minutes.
The default target_type defined in Enterprise Manager is ops_center_managed_host. The retrieved alerts are stored in the default target instance generic_ops_center_managed_host. Users can install and configure additional target instances based on specific requirements.
Administrators have the design option to view all Ops Center alarms in one central location or category within Oracle Enterprise Manager. They can choose to integrate the Ops Center alarms into an existing target node within Oracle Enterprise Manager for the platform in question. There also is an option to add the platform to the Oracle Enterprise Manager topology as a new Ops Center proxy object.
