Enterprise grade storage software built on commodity components

Wiping the sweat from his brow, Fishworks Engineer Bryan Cantrill reflects on the release of the new major Sun Storage 7000 series software update, known as 2010.Q1. Producing this release was no mean feat, Cantrill writes, given that it involved building enterprise-grade storage on commodity components, incorporating entirely new elements like Flash, and creating an ambitious management stack entirely from scratch.

Sun was clear from the outset about its goals, Cantrill says, observing that the team was certain customers were sick of paying monopoly rents for enterprise storage, and certain as well that a quantum leap in price-performance could be delivered.

Cantrill highlights the changes in the new release, noting that there were bug fixes, of course, but pointing out that 2010.Q1 also included the re-architecture of remote replication, along with integrated critical firmware upgrades to each of the essential components of the I/O path (HBAs, SIM cards and disks). He writes that the software evaluation process was also revised so that the release was more widely evaluated than any of its predecessors.

But that's not all. 2010.Q1 incorporates as well deduplication, iSER/SRP support, Kerberized NFS support and Fibre Channel support. Cantrill includes the results of the benchmarking work performed in the course of developing FC analytics in his blog.

And now that the release is available to customers, Cantrill points out that just as much effort will be devoted to support as was devoted to development. The Technical Lead for the release (Cantrill himself) will become the Support Lead for the release in the field. In other words, he will be answering the phone when users call about problems with 2010.Q1.
