Oracle plans to migrate and offer Sun certification offerings to Oracle certification offerings.

Sun Certification

The Oracle Certification page has posted FAQs on Sun certification. Paul Sorensen offers answers to some of the most pressing inquiries, such as whether Sun certification will continue to be valid; does one need to be recertified since Oracle has acquired Sun; can someone still become Sun certified, along with many others. In a separate entry, Sorensen also provides information on Oracle Database 11g certification.

In regards to the validity of Sun certification, Sorensen states that Oracle will continue to recognize any earned certifications and will remain valid for the version specified by the credential. He also notes that any certification track that may be retired or decommissioned will be announced on the Oracle Certification Program Web page.

Credential holders will not need to retake exams in order to keep their current Sun credentials, Sorensen states, although future certification offerings may require candidates to take an exam if they wish to upgrade.

Those interested in becoming Sun certified can still do so. According to Sorensen, paths and instructions posted on the Oracle Certification Program Web page can be followed to the appropriate Sun product desired for certification. Any updates or changes in requirements will be posted there. It is anticipated that Sun certification tracks will be modified to follow Oracle's certification model: Associate, Professional, Master, and Expert. All changes to the Sun certification credential names, tracks, and requirements will be available on the web site.

In terms of the name, Sun credentials will remain as such, which means your previously earned credential will not be rebranded as an Oracle credential. However, things may change in the future as Sun certification credentials will be through the Oracle Certification Program.

Bottom-line for any of these types of future evolutions is to check the Oracle Certification Web Page. More resources are listed below.

Oracle Database 11g Certified Master Exam

Oracle Certification has released a one-day upgrade exam, providing a path for those already certified as OCM on Oracle9i or Oracle Database 10g to upgrade their certification to Oracle Database 11g Certified Master.

Candidates upgrading their OCM certification to 11g via this 1-day upgrade exam do not need to first upgrade their OCP certification, explains Sorensen. Instead, candidates will be granted the 11g OCP certification along with the 11g OCM certification once the necessary OCM upgrade exam (and any additional required exams) have been successfully completed. The Course Submission Form must also be completed.

Sorensen states that Oracle University is focusing on the development of the more thorough two-day full OCM exam, with release of it expected sometime during 2010.
