Installing Sun Cluster Running Oracle RAC/CRS and Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems
Affords High Availability for the Database, OS, Storage System

Learn the installation steps for a 3-node Sun Cluster 3.2 01/09 (or later) configuration running with Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) / Cluster Ready Services (CRS) 11.1.0.7 and a Sun Storage 7210 Unified Storage System for high availability in the database, the OS, and the storage system.

An article by J. Randriam describes:

  • How to configure an NFS filesystem from the Storage System GUI.
  • How to mount the new filesystem from the cluster nodes.
  • How to create an iSCSI LUN for each node.
  • How to connect each node to its LUN.
  • How to disable fencing.
  • How to create a quorum device.
  • How to configure the Oracle RAC/CRS device to run on the storage system while taking advantage of the high availability services provided by Sun Cluster.

Step-by-step Randriam documents the process with corresponding code and resulting screen shots. Although a Sun Storage 7210 System was used in the configuration for this article, Randriam notes that the information should be applicable to the entire Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage series of products. The Sun Storage 7210 system is used to provide NFS filesystems for the CRS Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) and voting files, as well as for RAC database files, he explains. Additionally, it offers some iSCSI LUNs that are used as quorum devices or software quorum devices.

Before taking on this project, it is assumed readers already have installed the Sun Cluster software on the nodes, and that the Sun Storage 7210 is connected to the same subnet as the cluster nodes and is reachable from each of the nodes. A figure of the configuration is supplied. Randriam states the cluster nodes are running the Oracle Solaris 10 5/09 OS, while the Sun Storage 7210 is running the 2008.11.20.1.0,1-1.5 software.
