HPC in 2010
insideHPC.com is producing an exclusive video, audio, and feature series called "HPC in 2010," that looks ahead at the technologies, issues, and opportunities the HPC community will be facing in 2010. Visit its home page on insideHPC.com to view the latest postings.
Lustre File System Update
Former Sun executive, now Oracle VP for HPC Sales Support Marc Hamilton stated in a blog posting that Oracle will continue to invest in Lustre. He writes that the company plans on honoring all Lustre support commitments and will allow customers to renew their support contracts. He also notes that the Lustre User Group (LUG) 2010 Conference is planned for April 14-16, and Oracle will be making some interesting announcements. Stay tuned.
Oracle to Participate in ISC and HPC Consortium
In another blog entry, Hamilton confirmed that Oracle plans to continue participating in the International Supercomputer Conference (ISC) as well as the HPC Consortium seminar. ISC is Europe's leading Conference and Exhibition on High Performance Computing, Networking and Storage. This year's event will take place in Hamburg, Germany, on May 30-June 3. Dates for the HPC Consortium are set for May 29th-30th.
NFS Tuning for HPC Streaming Applications
With a goal to achieve NFS end-to-end throughput close to 1.0 gigabytes per second, Jeff Taylor relays his experience in setting up a Solaris 10 Update 8 NFS server application that would be able to stream data to a small number of Solaris NFS clients with the highest possible throughput for an HPC application. Due to business considerations, 10 gigabit ethernet (10GbE) was chosen for the network infrastructure.
HPC Application Performance with Flash Storage
An informative e-seminar explains how to boost application performance by over 2X by moving data faster, not processing. This can be accomplished by taking advantage of the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System coupled with Oracle-Sun's innovative Flash products. This webinar teaches viewers how to easily boost performance and reduce TCO and how Flash Storage is both cost effective and easy to implement. Registration is required to tune into the webinar. There is also a Sun Storage Solutions white paper "Turbo-charging HPC Application Performance with Flash Storage: Changing the Focus from Processing to Moving Data Faster" that may be of interest. Login or registration is also required to access the white paper.
How Flash Storage Fits into HPC
insideHPC talks with three Sun managers, including Larry McIntosh, Sun HPC Systems and Storage Architect, who provides a tour of the flash-integrated cluster live demos at Sun's SCO9 booth and also walks through managing a flash array in a Sun cluster. This is the second of three video conversations conducted during SC09. The first video shows Bob Murphy, Sun’s global business development guy for HPC open storage, who introduces Ken Kutzer. Kutzer lays out Sun’s storage portfolio and talks about Lustre. Then Harriet Coverston talks about Storage Archive Manager for long-term storage, and Christine Brandt rounds out the storage segment with a view of Sun’s tape hardware. The third talks with Prasad Pai, the director of systems management at Sun, who gives an in-depth walk-through of Sun Ops Center, a systems management suite for managing clusters of Sun systems in a datacenter.
