Solaris 10 OS as a virtual machine under Oracle VM 2.2

A few tips on how to install Solaris 10 OS as a virtual machine under an Oracle VM 2.2 environment have been posted by Honglin Su on Oracle's Virtualization blog.

He explains that Solaris 10 OS runs as a hardware virtual machine (HVM) which requires HVM support (Intel VT or AMD-V) on the underlying hardware platform. However, the OS has the paravirtualized (PV) drivers as part of the OS installed by default. Therefore, users should check to see if the server has HVM support, and this can be done from the Intel or AMD Web site if the specific CPU model is known.

Su instructs readers that the system BIOS setting will probably need to be modified in order to enable the HVM feature. If Oracle VM 2.2 server is installed, users can run an xm info command to verify if HVM is enabled. Su offers an example to assist in understanding.

He also supplies basic installation steps and tips for the Solaris 10 VM, which is similar to other types of operating system, like Linux or Windows on an Oracle VM environment. Essentially, users of Oracle VM Manager just need to:

  • Select "Create Virtual Machine" from the VM tab
  • Choose "Creating a Virtual Machine From Installation Media"
  • Select Install Media
  • Choose Server Pool
  • Pick the Solaris 10 ISO file and select the virtualization method "Fully Virtualized"
  • Fill out the Solaris 10 VM information
  • Confirm the Solaris 10 VM that is to be created.

Su notes that before installing the Solaris 10 OS, users need to set the network type of the Solaris 10 VM to "Paravirtualized" since the Paravirtualized drivers are part of the Solaris 10 OS and will be installed by default.

  • Set the Network Type of the Solaris 10 VM
  • Install Solaris 10 OS

All of the steps are accompanied by screen snippets so readers can compare their results with his. He also includes links to downloads and documentation throughout the blog.

Su then proceeds with how to start the Solaris 10 VM and verify the network has been set up correctly.
