The task of installing a multi-node RAC cluster of Oracle 11g R2 on Solaris 10 with an EMC PowerPath has acquired the reputation of being a troublesome assignment. In the interests of sparing readers some of the tribulations, Dossy Shiobara has written a guide to the installation that gathers heretofore difficult to find suggestions in a single, how-to source.
The first step involves configuring tunables in the "projects" section of Solaris 10. Shiobara provides the code he used for this step and includes instructions for checking these configurations, along with the code to enable certain Oracle processes such as crsd to run as root.
Shiobara helpfully saves his readers hours of fruitless effort by including in his blog the advice to set permissions on all the nodes in the cluster. Setting them on one alone leads to a disastrous waste of time, he writes.
Yet another pitfall to beware is the bug that results in the message "WARNING: oradism did not start up correctly." The blog includes workaround code to deal with this issue.
Next, Shiobara urges readers to back up the Enterprise Manager encryption key, since failure to do so makes it impossible to access the Enterprise Manager. The blog adds further code to work around the error message "NMO not setuid-root (Unix only)."
Sounds simple when you follow Shiobara's steps. Without them, the install is a little like picking your way through a mine field.
