Sun OpenDS Standard Edition 2.2
Updated Core Directory Server, Significant Improvements in Read/Write Performance
February 11, 2010,
Volume 144, Issue 2

New features include fractional replication, extensible matching rules for time-based attributes, assured replication, and ease-of-use improvements, such as default automatic backup and remote server management in the control panel

Sun OpenDS Standard Edition (SE) 2.2 provides improvement to the core directory server as well as a new proxy server capability to manage requests between LDAP client applications and remote LDAP servers (either Sun OpenDS SE 2.2 or Sun Directory Server Enterprise Edition (DSEE) 7.0). It also includes a web-based "Namefinder" lookup sample application to browse users in the Directory.

Sun OpenDS SE 2.2 is a high-performance, highly-extensible, pure Java directory server that delivers a fully compliant LDAPv3 server that passes all of the compliance, interoperability and security tests suites. Furthermore, Sun OpenDS SE 2.2 implements most of the standard and experimental LDAP extensions defined in the IETF as RFCs or Internet-Drafts, ensuring maximum interoperability with LDAP client applications.

This update - the second major version of Sun OpenDS SE - has a limited footprint allowing the directory to be embedded into other applications or equipment. Its rich set of APIs makes it easy to extend to add new services and increase usage scope.

The product architecture is designed to significantly increase performance both in read and write, and supports horizontal and vertical scalability.

Sun OpenDS Standard Edition 2.2 includes:

  • Easy 5 minutes installation capability
  • Rich command line interface to perform all online administrative tasks such as configuration and administration
  • Enhanced graphical control panel to manage local and remote server, data and schema
  • Replication protocol to replicate data across unlimited number of server and validated up to 8 servers with capability to insure High Data availability through an assured replication mechanism, support for fractional replication
  • Optimization to support import of large LDIF files and to rebuild indexes for large number of entries
  • Feature to publish changes to an external changelog
  • Advance security and password policies
  • Advanced backup and restore capabilities
  • Support for SASL encryption
  • Support for searching internationalized data
  • DSML-LDAP gateway
  • Includes schema required to support OpenSolaris naming services
  • A new proxy server to handle load-balancing, highly-available configurations, data-distribution with a global index.
  • An updated "Namefinder" as a sample application

Sun has stated that OpenDS is the foundation for future versions for Directory Server Enterprise Edition (DSEE). This release is not designed to replace the existing DSEE product line, rather it is an additional option to address certain customers' specific requirements: Java-based, embeddable solution with a limited footprint.

Although not designed to be a replacement for the existing DSEE product line, OpenDS does give users the opportunity for new deployments and early adopters to leverage, in a supported manner, the OpenDS open source project as well as start implementing new capabilities that will be part of DSEE 8.0

Sun OpenDS SE 2.2 provides only a core directory server and proxy capabilities. Customers having a near-term need for LDAP virtualization or synchronization with Active Directory should consider using and deploying Sun DSEE, suggests Sun.
