creating and preparing volumes on a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System to be published and used by a server running Microsoft Windows

The quick-start guide "Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007" by Ulrich Conrad provides an introduction to the steps for creating and preparing volumes on a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System (release 2009.Q3) to be published and used by a server running Microsoft Windows for use with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 as a common "share."

The author assumes the reader is familiar with both Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System concepts as well as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 concepts and functions. Conrad adds that, although the steps presented in this guide were performed on the Sun Storage 7210 Unified Storage System, they can nevertheless be used with other Sun Storage 7000 series models. This scenario uses the iSCSI protocol, he adds.

Conrad follows his introduction with a section on configuring Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, that includes such aspects as network; storage pool; projects and shares (including creating a project; initiators and targets; and creating an iSCSI LUN); editing LUN security properties; and analytics.

The guide then proceeds to the installation of Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007, dealing first with preparation of the infrastructure and then with the installation itself.

Finally, Conrad covers advanced data services, where he discusses snapshots; cloning a snapshot; replication; and accessing replicated data.

The guide is amply illustrated with screen shots and proceeds in a detailed, step-by-step style with each of the stages of the subject that it covers.

In an appendix, Conrad explains his preference for using iSCSI versus CIFS, which has largely to do with the need to set the Microsoft SQL Server trace flag 1807 when using a CIFS share on a remote system in order for the "create database" statement not to fail.
