High performance virtualization - a benchmark guide from Sun and AMD

A Ziff Davis eSeminar entitled "Architecting Superior Virtualization Performance with Sun and AMD" presents Tim Mueting, product manager, Virtualization Solutions with AMD, together with Ron Graham, technical product manager, Sun, where the two discuss AMD processor technology, its connections with virtualization, and benchmarks showing Sun servers and AMD Opteron processors deliver scalable performance.

The 55:13 video covers the AMD Opteron power efficient processors called HE and the high performance processors called SE. Some general information claimed by Mueting on these processors are:

  • AMD Opteron HEs offer up to 44% better performance to power ratio
  • HEs provide AMD's highest performance per watt
  • AMD Opteron SEs offer up to 25% performance increase over previous generations

Mueting continues by explaining the AMD's power efficient innovations including, AMD Smart Fetch, PowerNow!, PowerCap Manager, CoolCore, and Dual Dynamic Power Management. He also goes through the history and current design goals of AMD, touching on AMD 64, AMD-Vc, AMD-Vi, among other architectural and instruction set enhancements that help reduce overhead and complexity of virtualization.

Graham highlights the Sun Fire X4600 server, which with VMmark v1.1, currently runs at 29.11 @ 19 tiles. "That is over 100 virtual machines you can put in there," he explains, noting it is ideal for scalability since customers can start with four AMD Opteron processors with memory and build upon it if necessary, to six or up to eight sockets.

He also covers traditional benchmarking, explains tiles and how to monitor system resources as more tiles are added, the Sun Fire X4600 M2 Server and its architecture.

The seminar discusses some of the world record results achieved with Sun and AMD, and the benefits their solutions provide in regards to virtual machines and performance, reliability and reduced management and IT complexity.

This presentation will be available until April 29, 2010.
