T5140/T5240 Better IO Redundancy Than IBM Power 520 Server

Ritesh Shah discusses I/O RAS feature on Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140/T5240 compared to IBM Power 520 I/O. Looking at the reference architecture of an IBM Power 520 system, the internal system unit I/O subsystem(P5IOC2) resides on the system planar and clearly reflects as a single Point of Failure for all the critical IO components, Shah points out. Failure of this P5IOC2 chip will lead to a system collapse as the IO Facility will not be available on board.

On a T5140 / T5240, two separate IO Control Domain's can be configured for redundancy and reliability within the system, he writes, also noting that the two PCI-e switch on a T-Series system provides better IO bandwidth.

Updating Firmware on ILOM-based Sun Servers

Some of the ILOM-based Sun systems are Sun Fire X4100, X4100 M2, X4140, X4150, X4170, X4200, X4200 M2, X4600, X4600 M2. The three step process is provided followed by an example.

New 2TB SATA Drives for Sun Storage J4200 and J4400 Arrays

Set for availability Dec. 11, 2009, Sun had announced support for 2TB 7.2K RPM SATA drive for Sun Storage J4200 and Sun Storage J4400 arrays. Check availability with your respective Oracle-Sun product representative.

Hot-pluggable, 2TB, 3.5-inch, 7200 RPM SATA Drive for Sun Fire X4275 Servers

The hot-pluggable 3.5-inch 2000 GB (2TB) SATA 7,200 RPM drive for Sun Fire X4275 servers provides double the current storage capacity for these servers. With up to 12 drives and up to 24 TB of storage, the Sun Fire X4275 is ideal for storage-intensive applications such as data base or video capture and sharing. These drives were set for availability on Nov. 24, 2009. Check availability with your respective Oracle-Sun product representative.

Sun Fire X4540 Controller Module Assemble to Order (ATO) Option with 128 GB Memory

Sun Fire X4540 servers were set to have an ATO option for 128 GB Memory (using 8 GB DIMMs) on Nov. 24, 2009, giving ATO systems a wider range of configuration options. With 128 GB of memory, customers and partners would have twice the previous capacity offered for the most memory-intensive applications. Check availability with your respective Oracle-Sun product representative. [...read more...]
