Ritesh Shah discusses I/O RAS feature on Sun SPARC Enterprise T5140/T5240 compared to IBM Power 520 I/O. Looking at the reference architecture of an IBM Power 520 system, the internal system unit I/O subsystem(P5IOC2) resides on the system planar and clearly reflects as a single Point of Failure for all the critical IO components, Shah points out. Failure of this P5IOC2 chip will lead to a system collapse as the IO Facility will not be available on board. On a T5140 / T5240, two separate IO Control Domain's can be configured for redundancy and reliability within the system, he writes, also noting that the two PCI-e switch on a T-Series system provides better IO bandwidth.
