Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286)

A three-part Sun Developer Network article series by Deepak Gothe describes the new features available in the Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286) and extensions supported by OpenPortal Portlet Container 2.x. Part 1 provides an overview of the Java Portlet Specifications and explains in detail one of the main features introduced in JSR 286: coordination between portlets. Part 2 describes the other new features introduced in JSR 286. Part 3 describes the extensions supported by OpenPortal Portlet Container 2.x.

Java SE 6 Update 18 and Java EE 5 SDKs Refreshed

Java SE 6 Update 18 provides over 300 bugs fixes, although it does not include any security updates. Release notes have been published and the downloads are accessible. New Java downloads include the Java EE 5 SDK bundles with Java SE (JDK) 6, which has been enhanced with JDK 6 Update 18. The updated version of the Java EE 5 SDK Update 8 includes Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server v2.1.1 and Java SE 6 Update 18. Java EE 5 SDK Update 8 installation instructions have also been posted.

GlassFish Loadbalancer Configurator

The Loadbalancer plugin provides loadbalancing functionality to GlassFish. The Loadbalancer Configurator simplifies the task of installing and configuring of the Loadbalancer plugin on a web server. It has an easy to use graphical interface which accepts user inputs, installs and configures GlassFish loadbalancer plugin. Login or registration is required to access the download.

GlassFish Podcast Covers EJB 3.1

Specification and tech lead of the GlassFish EJB implementation Ken Saks is featured in a two-part GlassFish podcast, where he initially discusses the new features of the specification like packaging in WARs, the no interface view, EJB lite, Calendar-based timers, async calls, and more. Part two of the discussion focuses on the role of EJB's as part of the larger Java EE platform and how it relates to the new CDI specification, for instance. It also covers options for EJB clients, the role left for tools, among other topics.

Portable Web Servers with Java Card 3.0

Bruce Hopkins pens this technical article that describes how Java Card 3.0 technology allows developers to create and deploy servlet applications on smart card devices. Topics covered include a comparison between Java Card 2 and 3, and the Java Card Connected Development Kit with an example using Persistence. "The Java Card 3 platform is lightyears ahead of its predecessor. It includes several new features that allow developers to create extremely sophisticated applications using Java servlet technology," writes Hopkins. "Are you ready for a new generation of servlet applications that execute on a smart card?"

Java ME SDK 3.0 for Mac OS X

The Java ME SDK 3.0 is now available for the Mac OS X, bringing support for CLDC mobile development to Mac users for the first time. Java ME Platform SDK is a state-of-the-art toolbox for developing mobile applications. It provides device emulation, a standalone development environment, and a set of utilities for rapid development of Java ME applications.

GlassFish ESB v2.2 Released

New components added to this release include:

  • Email Binding Component: a binding component that supports configuration and connection to email servers within a JBI environment, allowing emails to be sent from and received by a JBI application.

  • REST Binding Component: a binding component that provides external connectivity for REST over HTTP from JBI applications, which allows external systems to invoke RESTful web services hosted by the JBI platform and allows JBI components to invoke external RESTful web services.

  • POJO Service Engine: a service engine that allows you to define business logic in Java (as Plain Old Java Objects) and then deploy those business objects in a JBI component, providing a simple and flexible method for using Java in integration applications.

GlassFish ESB packages now include GlassFish v2.1.1 and NetBeans 6.7.1. Additionally, Sun has released two add-on packs for GlassFish ESB: the Sun GlassFish ESB Health Care Pack and the Sun GlassFish ESB Platinum Pack.
