Free eBook: Guide to Oracle 11g and Database Migration
Overview of New Features, Issues to Consider Before Making the Move

Internet.com is offering an eBook on the Oracle Database 11g which highlights the latest features of the solution along with an overview of the issues to consider when making a database migration.

Oracle Database 11g is available in a choice of editions: Standard Edition One, Standard Edition, and Enterprise Edition. All editions are built using the same common code base, which means database applications can scale from small, single processor servers to clusters of multi-processor servers without changing a line of code. Additional options for enhanced performance, scalability, availability, security and manageability are available with Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition.

In the 17-page eBook, Jim Czuprynski provides his take on the best features in Oracle 11g. Topping his list is result caches that comes in three different structures:

  • The SQL query result cache, which is an area of memory in the Shared Global Area (SGA) that can retain the result sets that a query generates.

  • The PL/SQL function result cache, which can store the results from a PL/SQL function call.

  • Finally, the client result cache, which can retain results from queries or functions on the application server from which the call originated.

Second on his list of favorite features is improved SQL tuning, followed by the new system testing tools, advisors and fault diagnostics, flashback enhancements, SecureFiles, improved database security, partitioning upgrades, ASM enhancements, and data guard enhancements. He offers his opinions on each of these and how they work in assisting IT organizations in moving toward automatic database management.

Steve Callan takes on the task of offering guidance in migrating a database. He suggests separating the overall migration into at least two distinct stages so that the move is done in safe, incremental steps. Callan also discusses the process of export and import, providing reasons to use indexfile=filename on an import.

Planning the move is of utmost importance, and Callan covers four areas where he believes planning can make a difference: general administration, the export phase, the import phase, and a handoff phase.

As a sidebar, the eBook outlines seven interview questions to ask a DBA before hiring.

Registration is required to download the eBook, which also comes with the "Oracle Database 11g Product Family Guide." for an overview of the Oracle Database family of products.
