A powerful combination for higher education: Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions 9.0 and Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System

The Sun BigAdmin paper "Deploying Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions [9.0] on Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System explains that the solution can be successfully deployed with Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems, provided the underlying application server, web server, and relational database management system (RDBMS) platforms are installed and configured correctly. Author Abhishek Gupta outlines the details of the process required to implement this deployment.

PeopleSoft Campus Solutions is a suite of software that installs and runs on a server, not on the Sun Unified Storage System, Gupta writes, adding that the software utilizes a database in the backend that can use the storage system for storing database data.

According to the author, PeopleSoft 9.0 provides an architecture that is flexible and adapts to a wide variety of schools. It is designed to enable institutions to maximize their investment by reducing support costs and leveraging a robust and scalable architecture.

Three primary areas of focus for Campus Solutions 9.0 are:

  • Componentization
  • Service Oriented Architecture
  • The Person model

The paper discusses each of these focus areas in detail and then proceeds, again in exact detail, with the steps called for in the installation on the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System of the following solutions:

PeopleSoft Infrastructure

PeopleSoft's high-level, platform-independent nature means that installation is quite straightforward, because much of the “work” is done in the lower-level software platforms. Simply put, PeopleSoft uses certain components that are installed to behave as web server or application server. In addition, an existing RDBMS installation (on the same container, same server, or local server) must be accessible, Gupta notes. He provides illustrations of several potential configurations using Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System.

Web Server Installation

The installation of PeopleSoft Campus Solution 9.0 is divided into three tiers:

  • Web tier
  • Application tier
  • Database tier

Installing the application tier and the web tier on the same server is discussed.

Application Server Installation

Here the author notes that the first step of this procedure involves repeating steps from the web server installation procedure, because the same steps need to be done to install the application server. He also includes information about the installation of the necessary licenses.

Oracle Database Server Installation

Here, Gupta advises that in the creation of the Oracle Database for PeopleSoft Campus Solutions 9.0, users should employ a powerful machine to create the database and to import the seed data into the database using PeopleSoft's DataMover utility. The DataMover utility is single threaded and it might take 4 to 5 days to import 50 Gbyte of data onto systems built on UltraSPARC T1 Plus processors. Therefore, consider using Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 Server or Sun SPARC Enterprise M5000 Server for this task.
