Solaris OS milestone releases come out approximately every 3 to 5 years, and are supported for a minimum of 10 years.

Vintage customer support for Solaris 2.6 and 7 have reached retirement. Support calls will no longer be accepted and patch access will no longer be available for these versions, Sun reports. Licensed customers can continue to run these versions; however, they should keep in mind the lack of support and patches.

Sun recommends all customers using Solaris upgrade to the latest release, version 10. Sun has over 11,000 x64/x86 and SPARC applications and solutions that run on the Solaris 10 OS. If you're already running Solaris, upgrading to Solaris 10 is the most cost-effective way to take advantage of the latest generation for SPARC and x64 systems. For SPARC systems, Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 Containers lets you quickly move your existing environments to the newest CoolThreads and M-Series systems, preserving your existing investments in software, and training. If you're adding x64 systems to your mix, run Solaris 10 to get the best performance, security and stability, without sacrificing the business-oriented product support and life cycle your business depends on.

If you are unfamiliar with the Solaris lifecycle, Sun provides milestone releases approximately every 3 to 5 years. These are supported for a minimum of 10 years. More details on the end of service life status for Solaris is available from the Sun Website.
