Veritas Storage Foundation by Symantec is a comprehensive solution for centralized heterogeneous online storage management from one screen. The latest version, 5.1 for the Solaris SPARC and Solaris x64 platforms, offers some key innovations, including zero reboot install and zero reboot upgrade, fully automated Solid State Drive (SSD) optimization, continued focus on enabling a full Thin Provisioning ecosystem, and support for Oracle 11g R2 RAC.
Part of the appeal with Veritas Storage Foundation is that it simplifies server migration by providing the same storage management tool for all operating systems, thereby reducing vendor lock-in and eliminating the need to use NFS or tape to migrate data. It also enables customers to build a foundation for utility computing by integrating with various hardware and software packages for a seamless data center.
This release includes the following products and options:
- Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 Standard
- Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 Enterprise
- Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 Standard Tier Upgrades
- Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 Enterprise Tier Upgrades
- Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 Standard to Enterprise Upgrades
Deploy Storage Foundation without the complication of managing and tracking license keys while maintaining full visibility of license deployment via Storage Foundation Manager (optional).
Simplified Product Licensing
The database specific functionality formerly requiring the purchase of additional licenses is now included in the base Storage Foundation licenses.
The simplified web-based installer uses fewer user steps, provides a 70% reduction in packages, smaller host footprint, enhanced support for Jumpstart and Live Upgrade, non-interactive upgrade support and zero reboot installs, and upgrades speed and simplify deploying Storage Foundation 5.1.
IPv6 and mixed IPv4/IPv6 environments are now supported across the complete Storage Foundation stack.
Optimize Performance/Cost Ratio with SSDs
Simplify storage management in mixed SSD and HDD environments, including automated targeted SSD optimizations with Dynamic Storage Tiering.
Increased Storage Utilization
Maximize storage capacity across heterogeneous operating systems and storage hardware.
I/O Path Availability and Performance
Efficiently spread I/O across multiple paths for maximum performance, path failure protection, and fast failover, even when moving data between different array types.
Dynamic Storage Tiering
Dynamically move files to different tiers of storage to rapidly respond to changing business needs, reduce total cost, and seamlessly take advantage of performance enhancements available with SSD technology.
Enterprise-wide centralized management of heterogeneous applications, servers, and storage.
Seamless Data Migration
Free data from technology changes with simple server migrations across different operating systems, as well as handling data migration between dissimilar arrays.
Multi-vendor Hardware Infrastructure
Reduce capital expenditures with broad support for heterogeneous operating systems and storage hardware.
- PRODUCT SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS -
Before installing any of the Veritas Storage Foundation products, it is recommended that users confirm their systems have enough free disk space. Use the "Perform a Preinstallation Check" (P) menu or the -precheck option of the product installer to determine whether there is sufficient space: # ./installer -precheck
The max required disk space required for Storage Foundation 5.1 is:
- 550 MB in the /opt directory
- The language pack requires another 15 MB
- 300 MB in /usr
- 20 MB in /var
SUPPORTED OPERATING SYSTEMS
Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1 is supported on SPARC processor-based Sun systems running Solaris 9 and 10. Solaris x64 servers run on Solaris 10 with Veritas Storage Foundation 5.1.
