System administrator Peter Tribble is given credit for creating a number of GUI applications designed to help users understand their systems better. These analysis tools are great for beginning and seasoned sysadmins, notes Ben Rockwood who selected a few of his favorites for a blog entry, offering screenshots and short synopses for each:
SolView
This feature packed tool allows users to explore installed packages, services, explore the hardware configuration and much much more.
JKstat
JKstat makes the immense depth of statistical data offered by Solaris Kstats friendly and accessible with a learning curve of zero, notes Rockwood, who names it as one of his favorites. JKstat offers not just data display but intelligent graphing and more.
JProc
JProc explores the Solaris /proc filesystem and unlocks all its data, which is the same as the ones used by all the various ps* tools, in an easy to use GUI.
Jangle
Rockwood proclaims it as his SNMP Browser of choice since it makes sense of the OIDs, graphs data for behavioral understanding, and generally helps users when working with SNMP.
Peter's Solaris Zone
Tribble, who is currently a member of the OpenSolaris Governing Board, keeps a complete list of his various tools on the site Peter's Solaris Zone.
"Clearly Peter's producing fantastic tools and deserves the respect and admiration of the entire community," Rockwood writes. "Try out some of his awesome tools and make sure to let him know how much you appreciate his effort."
