The Internet SCSI (iSCSI) protocol allows a client system (initiator) to send SCSI commands to targets on a remote server over an existing IP network infrastructure, thus providing a low cost alternative to a Storage Area Network (SAN) infrastructure. Learn how to configure the volumes in the Sun Open Storage system so they can be exported as iSCSI targets, and then configure those iSCSI LUNs at the database server to be used for Oracle Automatic Storage Management (ASM).
A quick start by Sridhar Ranganathan and Jeffrey Wright discusses deploying Oracle 10g or 11gR1 ASM on version 2009.Q3 of the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems. ASM is a feature in Oracle Database 10g or later that provides a simpler data management and a vertically integrated file system and volume manager that are specifically built for Oracle databases.
Tested configurations listed are:
- Oracle 10.2.x on Solaris 10 05/08 OS SPARC, x86 (64-bit)
- Oracle 10.2.x on RHEL 4.x, 5.x x86 (64-bit)
- Oracle 11.1.0.6, 11.1.0.7 on Solaris 10 05/08 OS SPARC
- Oracle 11.1.0.6, 11.1.0.7 on RHEL 4.x, 5.x x86 (64-bit)
It should be noted that the Oracle Database is supported on various Solaris and Linux versions, so check the Oracle compatibility matrix with OS versions.
