There is now a VirtualBox Appliance Image available for Solaris 10 10/09, or so Bruce Hill, Sr. Manager, SPARC Platform Software Release Engineering, reports in his blog Solaris 10 10/09 VirtualBox Appliance Image. Hill writes that the latest version of the Solaris 10 operating system (10/09, also referred to as Update 8) can be downloaded as an importable VirtualBox OVF appliance image, which will enable users to get started working with Solaris 10 in the VirtualBox 3.x environment on x86/X64 machines.
According to the blog, the image is smaller at just under 1.5Gb than downloading the complete DVD Media Kit iso image. It also starts up and imports much quicker than doing a normal DVD install, Hill adds.
The image, the blog continues, is taken from a default installation of Solaris 10 10/09. Before the image was exported to OVF format, the sys-unconfig command was run on the image. Importing this image and starting it up for the first time, will cause a prompt to select several parameters for your installation (keyboard layout, networking, root password, time zone, etc.).
Hill invites feedback from users on this first-ever download of a Solaris 10 appliance image available.
A second Sun blog includes a few screen shots and the minimal instructions needed for downloading and importing the Solaris 10/09 Virtual Appliance.
