an integrated enterprise portal solution that delivers scalability and performance for Web and enterprise environments

Sun Systems for Enterprise 2.0 and Web 2.0 with MySQL is a new reference architecture featuring Sun servers, Flash storage products, MySQL Enterprise Server, the Sun GlassFish Portfolio, the ZFS file system, and a choice of OpenSolaris, Solaris or Linux operating systems. A Sun BluePrints paper describes the hardware and software components of the reference architecture, studies the scalability of the architecture and includes step-by-step directions for setup and configuration.

Nick Kloski and Alejandro Medrano introduce the solution as scalable and modular in design, featuring hardware and software products that have been tested to work together, and can help speed the deployment of large-scale Web deployments.

Reviewing the architecture, the two discuss the benefits it provides in building Web services, delivered through a Web-based portal interface.

Specific hardware and software components include:

  • Server hardware: Sun Blade 6000 Modular System consisting of Sun Blade 6000 chassis, Sun Blade X6250 Server Modules and Sun Blade 6000 Virtualized Multi-Fabric 10 GbE NEM

  • Storage: Sun Storage 7410 Unified Storage System

  • Rack: Sun Rack II

  • Operating System: OpenSolaris (release 2008.11

  • Application Software: Sun GlassFish Portfolio consisting of the Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server and the Sun GlassFish Web Space Server

  • Database Software: MySQL database, version 5.1

A figure is added depicting the relationships between the various hardware and software components. One Sun Blade 6000 chassis contains 10 server modules, each running the GlassFish application server software. A second Sun Blade 6000 chassis contains additional server modules running the MySQL database software and the load balancer software. All server modules run OpenSolaris.

This architecture includes multiple 10 GbE connections. Each Sun Blade 6000 chassis provides one 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connection through the Virtualized 10 GbE NEM. This reference architecture uses one NEM, but for redundancy and better performance a second NEM could be used, as well as additional 10 GbE Express Modules, to further enhance performance. The Sun Storage 7410 Unified Storage System is connected via 10 GbE, and the architecture also includes one additional connection from the switch to the customer’s 10 GbE network.

The solution's scalability and database-related information can be used to help determine proper sizing of systems. The authors discuss testing that was performed to investigate this scalability of the reference architecture. Two graphs provide results from tests run with four and eight server modules. The four server module testing showed near linear scaling (measured in logins per second), while response times remained acceptable throughout the test. The results with eight server modules were very similar to those with four server modules. The linear scaling of user logins is evident, as is the acceptable response times across all test runs.

Using the test results as a reference, Kloski and Medrano address the flexibility of the design identifying six steps that can be used in a deployment with the reference architecture.
