Running Joomla! on NAS

The Sun BigAdmin paper "Joomla! Deployment Guide for Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems" by Sun ISV Engineering staffer Eric Reid was written to provide guidance for readers looking to install and configure the open source Joomla! content management system with the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System product family.

Joomla, an award-winning content management system (CMS) written in PHP, which enables users to build web sites and powerful online applications, installs and runs on a server rather than on the storage device. Reid addressed three questions in the course of his research:

  • What does it mean to install and run Joomla! in concert with Sun's Unified Storage Systems?
  • What product features can be leveraged by Joomla! deployments?
  • Are there performance or scaling tunings that can be made on these devices?

Reid used a Sun Storage 7110 Unified Storage System (version 2009.Q2). Sun x64 servers running the Solaris OS were used. For this example, he assumed the Solaris server is running the OpenSolaris 2009.06 release, and will use the PHP, MySQLTM, and Apache web server from pkg.opensolaris.org.

The author writes that Joomla!'s high-level, platform-independent nature means that installation is quite straightforward, as much of the 'work' is done in the lower-level software platforms. Joomla! is installed on top of an existing web server installation. In addition, an existing RDBMS installation (on the same container, same server, or local server) must be accessible, he cautions. Reid covers the installation step-by-step, along with setting up Joomla! and MySQL.

Joomla's! platform-independent nature stems, in part, from the fact that it highly leverages the underlying web server and RDBMS, according to Reid and, as such, performance tuning of Joomla! is almost always dependent on performance tuning of these underlying layers.

Reid concludes that in the vast majority of cases, Joomla! deployments should "just work" with Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems, providing the underlying web server and RDBMS platforms are installed and configured correctly.
