New Sun OpenStorage products planned for 2010 have been revealed and reported to SearchStorage. These include a new high-end 7000 series storage product, two new JBODs (Just a Bunch Of Disks) and an entry-level device that can hold up to 60 SAS2 drives.
According to information obtained by Simon Sharwood with SearchStorage, the newest member to the Sun Storage 7000 Series is code-named “Anago.” Sun says it is the “first SAS2 Unified Storage system, delivering exceptional performance with 10x more flash.” The new array will provide “multi-dimensional scalability supporting 33% more capacity for large data sets” and promises “32% more storage density including central power and cooling infrastructure.”
Other features of Anago are purported to include:
- Ability to use 384x 3.5” Hot-swap SAS disks
- Provision for 96x 24GB read flash
- Capacity for 6x 100GB write flash
- The ability to operate a hybrid storage pool
- 2x capacity with expansion rack
A SAS 2 switch fabric will also be part of the device, along with what Sun calls “Write backup (uSSD) upon power loss” and “Redundant PSU (N+N).” Anago is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2010.
The JBODs consist of a unit called "Riverwalk 2” and "Witte." According to Sun, Riverwalk 2 is a four rack unit height unit holding 24 disks that can scale to reach 288 disks and a total of 576 gigabytes of storage with daisy chaining. Each unit comes equipped with two switched I/O modules, each boasting three 24Gbps SAS2 ports. Expect to see the device in the first quarter of 2010.
“Witte” is a JBOD unit holding 24 SAS, SATA or solid state disks. Up to six of the devices can be combined for a total capacity of 144 drives.
The entry-level device known as “Iwashi+” can hold up to 60 SAS2 drives. The array will come with two quad-core Intel CPUs for added speed and assist in driving traffic over the 1Gbps or 10Gbps network interfaces that are options for the machine. Iwashi+ is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2010.
The Sun briefing session that was the source of the report included details of more forthcoming storage products. These include SSD/Flash drives and a host bus adapter with added flash called "Aura". Another flash product described as "Lightning Flash" appears to come in a 1U rack unit form factor.
