Smart DisplayCard Token with Sun VDI

With new ActivIdentity Smart DisplayCard Tokens in hand, Rene Klomp writes about integrating them with the Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). The ActivIdentity Smart DisplayCard Token is described as combining the security of a token with public key infrastructure (PKI) features for online authentication in a smart card form factor. In his experiment, Klomp writes that he uses it as a "dumb" smartcard that is assigned to a desktop or user in VDI and where the authentication is done against AD by username / password. Import Existing VDI File into VirtualBox

In seven steps Kai Seidler describes how to import an existing VDI file into VirtualBox, "it's quite easy, if you know how," proclaims Seidler.

VirtualBox 3.1 Beta 1

Download the binaries for the first beta release of VirtualBox 3.1, which will be a major release once finalized. Bob Netherton identifies some newly added features to this version:

  • Migration of a VM session from one system to another (Teleportation)
  • VM states can be restored from an arbitrary snaphot (Branched snapshots)
  • New snapshots can be taken from other snapshots (allows for forking VMs)
  • 2D video acceleration for Windows guests using the host video hardware for overlay stretching and color conversion
  • The network attachment type can be changed while a VM is running
  • Experimental support for new USB features in OpenSolaris hosts (nv124 and later)
  • Significant performance improvements for PAE and AMD64 guests (VT-x and AMD-V only; normal (non-nested) paging)
  • Experimental support for EFI (Extended Firmware Interface)

Tips and Resources on VirtualBox

An entry on the VirtualBox Buzz shares links from a variety of sources on VirtualBox (VB). From fixing Windows 7 sharing in VB and installing OpenSolaris in VB to sharing folders between a VB host and Virtual Mac, and running WinXP in Fedora using VB, there's a lot of learning to be had.
