ZFS Now Offers Built-in Deduplication

ZFS Deduplication Features in PSARC
Joerg Moellenkamp highlights two features for Solaris in the PSARC process in a recent blog. The first feature is the PSARC case 2009/571 - ZFS Deduplication Properties, whose mechanism is based on checksums to find duplicates. The second is the 2009/557 - ZFS send dedup case, which describes the changes to the stream generated by zfs send to support deduplication on this stream of data.
ZFS: Changing The Way You Look at Storage
Rajadurai also completed a webcast along with OurStage's Mark Niedzielski on ZFS basics and its capabilities for storage management, filesystem, and volume. Hybrid storage, benefits of snapshots, and tuning hints are also discussed. An accompanying slide presentation also has been posted.

Multiple LDom vdisks With the Same Backend
Jason Callaway writes: "A cool feature of LDoms 1.2 software is support for multiple guest domains accessing the same vdisk backend. This is handy if you've got a file system (multi-writer) that supports concurrent writes from multiple hosts. Keep in mind, though, that while you can have 1:many relationship between backends and virtual disks (vdisk), the virtual disk server device (vdsdev) to vdisk relationship is still 1:1." Working off an example from the LDoms 1.2 Administration Guide's section "Export a Virtual Disk Backend Multiple Times," Callaway presents script to accomplish the task.
