New 2.88GHz Quad-core SPARC64 VII Processor/Memory Boards Supported on Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 Servers
There are new higher performance 2.88GHz quad-core SPARC64 VII processor/memory boards (CMU) with a higher throughput memory controller (MAC+) available to order for new Sun SPARC Enterprise M9000-64 servers.
Availability of the CMU as field upgrades and on the SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000-32 servers are expected to be announced by year's end. All current Sun SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 CMU boards will support the SPARC64 VII 2.88GHz processor modules, Sun states. However, it is strongly recommended to upgrade the CMU board to get the full performance improvement with the enhanced MAC+ memory controller. A CMU upgrade part number will be made available when upgrades are announced. For exact dates of availability, please check with a Sun or Reseller account manager.
Sun reports this new offering will provide up to 16% performance boost from the current SPARC64 VII 2.52GHz CMUs. The 2.88GHz SPARC64 VII quad-core options can be mixed and matched in the SPARC Enterprise M9000 servers with the current SPARC64 VI (2.28 or 2.4GHz) and SPARC64 VII (2.52GHz) options.
Each processor consists of four SPARC V9 cores with two simultaneous threads per core. SPARC64 VII is built with an advanced 65nm Cu 10-layer process technology for high speed and density. Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) improves throughput on the SPARC64 VII. This multithreaded technology that enables the multithreaded control instructions to run in parallel across both threads in a core. There is no thread context switch time and the two threads in the core share the instruction pipeline smoothly. SMT increases the CPU throughput from 40 to 80 percent. L2 cache misses are hidden effectively using SMT technology.
The SPARC64 VII processor options are supported on all SPARC Enterprise M8000 and M9000 servers with minimum system XCP version 1090 and Solaris 10 10/08. Although the 2.88GHz SPARC64 VII options can be supported with Solaris 10 10/08, it is recommended that the Solaris 10 5/09 be used. All third-party software supported on any Sun SPARC Solaris 10 server should run with these new processors.
Sun Services Enterprise Installation Service (EIS) is available for the M8000/M9000 servers. EIS is a comprehensive installation and configuration service designed to ensure system optimization for stability and performance.
