Sun Storage 6180 Array Latest Addition to Sun's Disk Storage Portfolio
The Sun Storage 6180 Array is a high-performance, enterprise-class, full 8 Gigabit per second (Gb/sec) I/O Fibre Channel solution with backend loop speeds of 2 or 4 Gb/sec. It is modular, rackmountable, and scalable from a single dual-controller tray (1x1) configuration to a maximum configuration of 1x7 with six additional CSM200 expansion trays behind one controller tray.
With up to 112 intermixed drives, the Sun Storage 6180 Array provides the ability to combine FC and SATA disk drives, as well as the upcoming FDE expected in Q1 2010, in a tiered storage environment. Plus, the next-generation 8 Gb/sec FC interfaces integrate seamlessly into existing 2 Gb/sec or 4 Gb/sec infrastructures.
Sun reports that this new array delivers 50% more performance than Sun's previous generation, and over 70% better price/performance than the IBM DS5020. These numbers are from the Sun Storage 6180 Array SPC-1 Submission identifier A00081 results, which demonstrated 26,090.05 SPC-1 IOPS, $4.70/SPC-1 IOPS over a total ASU capacity of 5,145.060 GB with mirrored data protection level and a total TSC price (including three-year maintenance) of $122,623. Comparatively, the IBM System Storage DS5020 Express SPC-1 Submission identifier A00076 results showed 26090.05 SPC-1 IOPS, $8.08/SPC-1 IOPS over a total ASU capacity of 5145.060 GB with mirrored data protection level and a total TSC price (including three-year maintenance) of $210,782.
"With 30 years of modular storage as its foundation, Sun has built a rich history of delivering high-performance archive solutions to customers," said Jason Schaffer, senior director, Storage, Sun. "The new Sun Storage 6180 array leverages this storage innovation and seamlessly integrates across the Sun Storage 6000 family, again topping competitors with a rock-solid storage platform."
