Sun is working closely with Verizon Wireless to help foster the recently launched Verizon Developer Community (VDC). Sun is providing key technologies and services to support VDC and help build the V CAST Apps storefront, scheduled to launch later this year.

Built on the Sun Java Content Delivery Server, the V CAST Apps storefront will enable Verizon to manage and deliver mobile applications and personalized content such as ringtones and wallpaper to millions of devices across the Verizon Wireless network. In addition, the Sun Java Content Delivery Server - a core component of Sun's Java Warehouse Platform - powers the VDC lifecycle of content enabling developers to upload and manage their mobile applications via the VDC application submission portal.

The VDC is designed for mobile developers who want to learn about Verizon's applications programs, to submit applications for the soon-to-be launched V CAST Apps storefront, and to interact with Verizon experts and others in the mobile applications community.

The developer portal offers simple, click-through agreements so developers can easily market applications. It features a streamlined testing and certification process for applications, with the goal of having approved applications launched within 14 days of submission. It also gives developers the opportunity to set their own prices for applications, among other things. Developers who have created apps for platforms such as Java, BREW, Android, Windows Mobile and others are welcome to join the VDC and to submit their concepts and applications for V CAST Apps.

"We are committed to the success of the VDC and excited about collaborating with Verizon Wireless to help them build a world-class application store and support their new developer program," said Jeet Kaul, senior vice president of Java engineering at Sun. "Working together, we will make it easy for developers to quickly get their applications to market, and to expand the community to include the millions of Java developers who build applications for Java ME, the leading mobile application platform."
