Business Benefits of Virtualizing IT Infrastructure
White Paper Presents Virtualizing with Sun CMT Solutions
September 22, 2009,
Volume 139, Issue 4

shows how businesses have reduced costs using CMT technology from Sun

The new white paper "Virtualizing Enterprise Application Infrastructure with Sun Chip Multithreading (CMT) Technology" addresses issues many datacenters are currently facing - how to lower TCO while supporting more customers and reducing time to market for new services. This Sun white paper describes the business benefits of consolidating enterprise applications onto Sun CMT rackmount and blade servers, which come with built-in virtualization technology, to optimize a datacenter's performance at a lower cost.

The paper describes apropos Sun solutions and technologies, including Sun Blade T6340 and T6320 Server Modules, the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440, T5240, T5140, T5220, and T5120 Servers, Sun Logical Domains (LDoms), and Solaris Containers to demonstrate:

  • How Sun's built-in virtualization technologies like LDoms and Containers can help increase ROI substantially. Specifically, an ROI of 1696% based on an initial investment of $226,892 USD (with an internal rate of return of 182%)
  • How CMT can save IT environments money (in some cases in excess of $4 million USD over 5 years, Sun reports)
  • How refreshing aging application infrastructure through virtualization and consolidating can reduce the number of datacenter servers by a ratio of 13:1
  • Gaining up to a 12% performance improvement by consolidating the workloads from legacy systems onto Sun servers with CMT technology
  • Reducing power and floor space requirements between 80% to 90% through this type of consolidation
  • How a consolidation project can pay for itself in 16 months

Another point made in the paper is that Sun is the only vendor to bundle virtualization technology, cryptographic acceleration, and the OS at no extra cost.

"The key to implementing a successful virtualization strategy is to assess the assortment of available technologies and choose the features that meet both business and technical requirements," the authors write. "Cost-effective virtualization running on Sun's CMT servers helps to create simplified and standardized IT environments, while improving the ability to deploy services and maximize system usage efficiencies."
