Ron Graham has written a 10-page PDF for system administrators outlining the basic steps of setting up VMware Infrastructure 3 functionality on the Sun Fire X4150 and implementing shared storage with the Sun Storage 7210 Unified Storage System. The quick start guide covers
Installing VirtualCenter Server and VI Client
Graham walks readers through these steps which includes database selection and licensing.
For a Windows environment, Graham explains that the VMware Infrastructure client and VirtualCenter server components can be installed separately or on the same Windows system. Although the default is Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express database, Sun recommends Oracle or a SQL Server database and that VirtualCenter Server be installed on Windows 2003 or 2008.
ESX Server Installation
The install of the ESX Server software is on the Sun Fire X4150 with use of the graphical installer. Graham offers tips on getting past installation errors, such as not receiving the mode selection page or if no disk drives appear.
Starting the VI Client
This section explains launching the VI Client, which was installed on the VirtualCenter Server. The VI Client is the interface to VirtualCenter Server and ESX hosts, and used to manage them both.
Shared Storage Implementation
The shared storage is the Sun Storage 7210 Unified Storage System. The ESX Server supports using Network Attached Storage (NAS) through the NFS protocols. Sun recommends that each ESX Server has a Vmkernel port correctly configured. Because of the amount of network traffic, it is also recommended that several dedicated network ports are configured depending on the amount of network load.
In this section, Graham goes through creating a filesystem for NFS file sharing.
