VirtualBox 3.0.6 Released
This maintenance update includes a number of bug fixes and performance improvements. Version 3.0.6 addresses over 50 bugs, including an issue on Mac OS X hosts that prevented password dialogues in 32-bit versions of Snow Leopard, bugs on Solaris hosts that could cause it to hang or deadlock and a problem that would cause NetBSD 5.0.1 CDs to stall during boot. Python has also been updated, RAM size restricted to 1.5 GB for 32-bit Windows hosts and Guest Additions installation on SUSE 11 guests has been fixed. More details can be found in the Change Log. The download is available for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris.
Managing Desktops Smarter
Michael O'Connor believes many are unaware of how Sun has combined VirtualBox with Sun Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and stateless Sun Ray thin-client technologies to offer a highly integrated, low-cost virtual desktop solution. He cites the this year's JavaOne conference, where Sun used this technology to host 21,000 virtual machines with a choice of Windows 7, Ubuntu Linux, or OpenSolaris desktop environments, with only 2 system administrators for support. O'Connor writes, "...VirtualBox combined with Sun's VDI and Sun Ray technologies should be on the short list of candidates for those on a limited budget and especially for those interested in creating a Windows Desktop as a Service offering with support for remote clients attaching over the public Internet."
Using Roles in Sun xVM Ops Center
Roles in the Sun xVM Ops Center allows system administrators to give access to a subset of assets or monitor assets without provisioning OSes. Owen Allen explains how to assign very specific roles to users in the Sun xVM Ops Center.
VirtualBox Rollback
Learn how to use ZFS snapshot and rollback features along with VirtualBox for an easy and safe test drive of an application without worrying about losing track of exactly which changes were made if you want to start over. A blog entry by Brian Leonard explains how to go back to a 'know to work state' even if the changes have affected the state of the operating system.

Smart Groups in the Upcoming Sun xVM Ops Center 2.5
Steve Wilson explains this feature as one that offers the ability to use several pre-fabricated Smart Groups that act as queries against the data model and create automatic associations. This goes beyond the arbitrary groupings of assets. He demonstrates step-by-step with screenshot accompaniments.
Sharing Data Between Host and Guest with Sun xVM VirtualBox
There is a simple way to share data between a host (MacOS X/Linux/Windows) and OpenSolaris guest with Sun xVM VirtualBox. Sriram Natarajan shows how he did it with just a few commands.
