Oracle VM Template Builder
For Rapid Configuration and Deployment of Applications

Oracle VM Template Builder is an open source, graphical utility that makes it easy to use Oracle Enterprise Linux "Just enough OS" (JeOS)-based scripts for developing pre-packaged virtual machines for Oracle VM. End-users and ISVs now have the option to either develop their Oracle VM Templates by using these JeOS-based scripts directly or via the graphical Oracle VM Template Builder.

The recently released Template Builder is a kit that includes a web-based application, and a minimum set of the packages for supported guest virtual machine operating systems. It is itself distributed as a template, and as an RPM. Template Builder uses JeOS to facilitate building an operating system instance with minimum packages for an Oracle VM Template. This helps reduce the disk footprint by up to 2GB or more per guest virtual machine, Oracle reports.

"As more complex enterprise software is virtualized, users and ISVs are seeking ways to make deployments easier, faster and more repeatable, while maintaining IT processes and the ability to customize their environment," said Wim Coekaerts, vice president Linux and Virtualization Engineering, Oracle. "Oracle VM Template Builder extends the benefits of Oracle VM by enabling customers to more rapidly configure and deploy applications while reducing costs through the use of server virtualization."

Oracle VM Template Builder is distributed as software packages via the Oracle Unbreakable Linux Network (ULN) and Oracle's public yum repository. To install and use Oracle VM Template Builder, the following prerequisites are needed and can be downloaded from http://www.oracle.com/edelivery:

  • Oracle VM Server
  • Oracle VM Manager: This is an optional, but recommended, prerequisite to deploy templates using Oracle VM Manager.
  • Oracle VM Template Builder template. The template requires 1GB of RAM and 60GB of disk space on an Oracle VM Server.
