get double the memory capacity to handle the most memory-intensive applications.

New memory options were expected to be made available in August for the Sun Blade X6270 Server Module and Sun Fire X4170, X4270 and X4275 Servers providing 8GB DDR3-1066 and 2GB DDR3-1333 for all the above listed servers. These memory kits would give users up to 144GB of main memory in these servers.

The new options would be offered as:

  • 8GB (1x8GB) Memory Kit, DDR3 1066MHz registered ECC DIMM for up to 144GB capacity

  • 2GB (1x2GB) Memory Kit, DDR3 1333MHz registered ECC DIMM

Users would get double the memory capacity for the Sun Blade X6270 server modules and Sun Fire X4170, X4270 and X4275 servers allowing them to handle the most memory-intensive applications.

Keep in mind if mixing 1033MHz memory with 1066MHz memory, the memory will run at the speed of the slowest DIMM.

Interested readers wanting to learn more about configuring and optimizing Intel Xeon Processor 5500 and 3500 series systems should see a Sun blog entry by John Nerl. He discusses the processors' memory subsystem and population guidelines and explains how to optimize the processors for capacity, performance and power. This detailed technical entry demonstrates that users will need to determine what aspects of these processors' offerings are best for their specific environment and configure accordingly.
