Learn more about the system architecture and configuration for the sun.com web site, which runs on the Sun Java System Web Server 7.0 update 4, in a reference deployment documented by Jed Michnowicz and Meena Vyas. In the article, the two describe some configuration tweaks added to the various Web Server instances to meet the company's business requirements.
NFS Boot vs. SAN Boot
A question by Joerg Moellenkamp about why SAN boot over NFS boot received a slew of responses. Moellenkamp cites many factors that make NFS much more preferable in his opinion, like deduplication, cloning, encryption, CacheFS, and ZFS. He writes, "Asides from my opinion that systems should be able to boot without help from the outside (debugging is much easier, when you have an OS on your metal), SAN boot looks to me like combining the worst of all worlds. You depend on centralized infrastructure, you have to put HBAs (at least two) in every server, you have to provide an additional fabric, encryption is still an unsolved problem." Find out what else he and others had to say.
Rainbow Falls and FMA
The Rainbow Falls processors will be the first to fully deploy sun4v platform independent FMA. Project Lead Scott Davenport writes, "In OpenSolaris today, the groundwork is there for building FMA topology sourced from platform firmware structures. Also, a rich set of platform agnostic CPU and memory diagnosis rules. I've also heard that the IO diagnosis rules will be moving toward platform independent constructs in the Rainbow Falls time frame as well."
Using busstat to Monitor Performance Counters
This featured tech tip on BigAdmin by Sree Vemuri explains how to use busstat to monitor performance counters for UltraSPARC T2 Plus External Coherency Hub Architecture. Topics covered include the external coherency hub architecture based on the UltraSPARC T2 Plus Crossbar and instrumentation for LPU, GPD, and ASU performance. Vemuri also provides a usage example along with reference links.
Sun Power Calculators: Eco Innovation
With power consumption an increasing priority, Sun has put together a list of its power calculators for many of its products so customers can get an idea of the power requirements for their data center.
Using Sun QFS File System in a Disaster Recovery Setup
A sample scenario is used to describe mounting Sun QFS at a disaster recovery site from a replicated or cloned disk. This BigAdmin community-submitted tech tip by Ansar T.A. tested the procedure on Solaris 10 8/07 (Update 4) and used Solaris Cluster 3.2 software with SAM-QFS software version 4.5.
What to do After Migrating from UFS to ZFS
On the SysAdmin's Journey blog, Justin Ellison explains that following a migration to ZFS from UFS using LiveUpgrade, users need to make a second disk bootable in case the first fails. In a few simple steps, he shows his readers how.
