This fourth-quarter filing is likely one of the last full quarters that Sun will make as an independent company

In its fiscal fourth quarter ending June 30, Sun recorded a $147 million net loss, or 20 cents a share, compared with a profit of $88 million or 11 cents a share in the same period a year earlier. Reporting these numbers in a regulatory filing after the market closed on August 28, the company said its loss would have been 3 cents per share excluding employee stock-based compensation and other expenses.

Sun sales in the latest period fell to $2.63 billion from $3.78 billion last year. Revenue from server sales fell 36 percent over last year to $1.1 billion, while Sun's support services revenue fell 15 percent to $886 million.

For the full fiscal year, the company lost $2.23 billion, versus a $403 million profit last year.

Sun is expected to post additional charges related to job cuts and facilities reductions over the next several quarters.

These latest results mean that Sun has lost $5.6 billion since 2002. It had two profitable years - 2007 and 2008 - during that period, the Associated Press reported.

This fourth-quarter filing is likely one of the last full quarters that Sun will make as an independent company as it awaits to be purchased by Oracle for $7.4 billion. Earlier in August, Oracle won U.S. antitrust regulatory approval for the merger. The Oracle-Sun deal still needs to be approved by the European Commission, which is the European Union's executive and regulatory branch, before the deal can close. A ruling from European regulators is expected September 3rd.
