support for mainstream Systems Management protocols and open standards ensures ILOM integrates simply and easily with leading System Management platforms

Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM) is system management firmware that is preinstalled on some Sun servers that enables users to actively manage and monitor components installed in the server. ILOM provides a browser-based interface and a command-line interface, as well as SNMP and IPMI interfaces. The latest version is 3.0 and its been updated in its security, scalability, User Interface (UI) performance, power monitoring, serviceability and system administration and management from the previous 2.0 version.

ILOM 3.0 is now offered in Sun Fire X2270, X4140, X4240, X4440, X4150, X4250, X4450, X4170, X4270, X4275, X4275 and X4600 M2 servers as well as Sun Blade X6270 server modules. New features of ILOM 3.0 are offered bundled with these systems' purchase at no additional cost.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

Domain Name System (DNS) Support

Domain Name System (DNS) allows ILOM users to use DNS names for administering and specifying various hosts, such as the log host or the backup server, to name a few. This feature saves IT administrator time and reduces chances for human errors. Also, use of DNS names on ILOM makes changes to network IP addresses seamless to the server.

Power Monitoring Capabilities

Gives near real time power monitoring telemetry, which allows IT administrators to closely monitor power usage.

Configuration Backup and Restore

Allows IT administrators to create and back up the system configuration securely to a remote location from which the system configuration can be restored. This capability reduces system downtime in the unlikely event that a system configuration gets corrupted, such as in cases of failed firmware upgrades or other scenarios.

Restore to Factory Defaults

This feature allows IT administrators to restore the system to factory defaults, helping to reduce system downtime in case of failures or misconfiguration.

Java-based Remote Storage CLI

This allows remote .iso images and CD/DVD drives to be mounted from the Command Line and in scripts, enabling IT administrators to automate and script tasks requiring remote storage.

Support for System Location, Contact, Description Fields

Allows IT administrators system identification via ILOM by labeling the system Location, Contact and a Description which can then be easily read via various ILOM interfaces (browser, IPMI, CLI etc). This can help reduce the chances of operator error.

Access to DMTF CLI via IPMITool from host or over LAN

Gives the IT administrator the choice of accessing and administering the system via the host or independently via the network LAN. System administration fits into existing way of system management within the data center while allowing room for change.

Ability to Disable Services

Gives the IT administrator the choice of disabling unused services to comply with security policies, which eases securing ILOM.

Finer-Grained User Roles

Gives IT administrators choice and flexibility in creating and assigning user roles that comply with policies of the data center and the corporation.
