an integrated stack of popular open source web tier infrastructure technologies

Sun GlassFish Web Stack 1.5 is now available. New in this release are the Web Stack Enterprise Manager and support for fully relocatable IPS(5) based Update Center distribution.

Sun GlassFish Web Stack is an integrated stack of popular open source web tier infrastructure technologies such as Apache HTTP server, MySQL, memcached, PHP and Ruby On Rails, optimized for Solaris, OpenSolaris and Linux platforms. It allows developers and administrators to leverage the technologies they already know and enables enterprises to standardize their existing LAMP/SAMP (Linux or Solaris, Apache, MySQL, PHP) deployments and strategies.

The Sun GlassFish Web Stack 1.5 download includes:

  • Enterprise Manager
  • Fully relocatable Update Center ips(5) image distribution
  • Sun Continuous Integration Server 1.312 (based on the Hudson open source project)
  • Apache HTTP Server 2.2.11
  • GlassFish v2.1
  • lighttpd 1.4.21
  • memcached 1.2.5
  • mod_jk 1.2.27
  • mod_perl 2.0.2
  • MySQL 5.0.67 and 5.1
  • PHP 5.2.9
  • Python 2.6
  • Ruby 1.8.7
  • Squid 2.7.STABLE5
  • Tomcat 6.0.18

The Web Stack Enterprise Manager is one of the highlights of this release. It offers users the ability to start, stop and restart open source web tier components within Web Stack. It also allows users to lay out monitoring statistics of the web tier components in graph form with the ability to move back in time within these graphs in order to understand the pattern of the load, among other things.

Another highlight is the fully relocatable Update Center. It can be installed on any number of locations on a given system without superuser (root) privileges. "Unlike our default native package distribution (SVR4 packages or the RPMs), this fully relocatable web stack distribution is built with a cross-platform version of the OpenSolaris image packaging sysem IPS/pkg(5). With this distribution, you can update the packages with ease, using the update tool, which is bundled with the distribution," notes one Sun blog. See first-hand how to install Apache via IPS/pkg(5) with GlassFish Web Stack 1.5 with the help of Jeff Trawick.

The GlassFish Web Stack 1.5 release is free to download and use even for production. The Web Stack Enterprise Manager feature is available for a 30-day evaluation. An unrestricted version of the Enterprise Manager along with a full 24x7 production support for Web Stack can be purchased via GlassFish Portfolio subscription, which offers flexible pricing for scalability with Basic, Silver, Gold and Platinum packages.
