The Enhanced Features of Sun Grid Engine 6.2 Update 3
Easing the Transistion from Traditional Grid Computing to the Cloud

Volume 137, Issue 5

includes improvements designed to reach a new level of scalability, performance and ease of management

Ease the transition from traditional grid computing to cloud computing with Sun Grid Engine (SGE) 6.2 Update 3, which features a Service Domain Manager (SDM) Cloud Adapter that provides an interface to manage Amazon's EC2 Amazon Machine Images (AMI). It also features Initial Power Saving support that uses the existing features of the Service Domain Manager to extract information about the ideal size of a cluster according to demand. The ability to flexibly add execution hosts as needed on demand delivers power and cooling cost savings.

Other features available in this latest version:

Inspect New Module

The new Sun Grid Engine Inspect module monitors the cluster, SDM and the workloads running on the cluster. This feature is implemented in multiple parts. First, it includes a new Cluster Monitoring Module, then adds a new SDM Monitoring Module that spans multiple SGE clusters and consolidates the cluster information. The Job Monitoring Module then tracks jobs as they enter and exit the cluster.

- Exclusive Host Scheduling -

The cluster can be configured to allow jobs to request exclusive use of various components of a given execution host, such as processors, memory or built-in accelerator boards. An exclusive job will only be scheduled on execution hosts that have no jobs currently running. Once an execution host begins running an exclusive job, no other jobs can be run on that host. For a parallel job running on multiple machines, this rule applies for the slave tasks of the job as well. The tight integration of parallel systems is made much easier and can eliminate the need for additional, complex scripts. The exclusive host scheduling enables consistent, repeatable results in parallel simulation engineering projects.

Graphical User Interface Installer

Introduced in SGE Update 2, the GUI installer simplifies the initial installation experience for new users, and complements the existing command line interface (CLI) installation and maintenance routines.

Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows Server Support

Provides support for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista (Enterprise and Ultimate Edition), Windows Server 2003R2 and Windows Server 2008.

Job Submission Verifier (JSV)

This is an automatic filter for the system administrator to control, enforce and adjust jobs requests. JSV scripts can be written in any scripting language, like Unix shells, Perl or TCL. JSV addresses ease-of-everything requirements and can lower the barrier for users of High Performance Computing (HPC) applications, where small typos or inaccurate resource requests from users can be automatically detected and corrected.

Licensing and Evaluation

Something to consider is obtaining a valid SGE license. This ensures supported binaries such as the new Amazon EC2 adapter and the SGE Inspect modules beyond the 30-day evaluation period that is permitted for users wanting to try out the new SGE release. A license or subscription is required after that time.

During the 30-day trial, downloaders can receive free email support for this release for help on installing and adjusting the software to a particular environment. A Sun Grid Engine evaluation questionnaire is required to be completed in order to qualify for this service. The questionnaire is linked on the SGE's download site.
