New features have been announced for the Sun Storage 6780 and Sun Storage 6580. These include eight to sixteen 8 Gbps Fibre Channel Host Ports, legacy tray support and support for 448 drives. Along with this announcement, Sun reported that it is retiring specific low volume Sun Storage 6140 and Sun Storage CSM200 DC & AC configurations.
8 Gbps Fibre Channel Host Ports
The Sun Storage 6580 will be offered with eight 8 Gbps host ports configurations and the Sun Storage 6780 with eight or sixteen 8 Gbps host ports. This means customers can experience:
- Faster applications: since the additional ports bring 100% throughput improvement (per channel) for data-intensive application, such as data warehouse (OLAP) and HPC, and 15% ITOPS and latency improvement for transactional applications (OLTP)
- Backwards and forwards investment protection: Auto-negotiates 2, 4 and 8 Gb/s FC; utilize existing infrastructure while creating new ones for the future; 8 Gb/s FC enables longer useful life going forward
- Infrastructure Simplification: Fewer channel/ports lowers acquisition and operational costs
- Bandwidth for Virtualization: 8 Gb/s FC interfaces provide the bandwidth needed to satisfy the large aggregate workloads created by consolidation. Everything (datasets, backup jobs, restores, remote mirrors etc.) completes twice as fast and is crucial for mixed workloads.
Support for 448 drives (28 expansion trays)
The Sun Storage 6780 now supports up to 448 drives. The Sun Storage 6580 will continue to support 256 drives.
With the Sun Storage 6780, customers can get up to 448 TB of raw capacity for data-intensive applications and large secondary storage requirements. This new feature can:
- Simplify storage management by consolidating more data in one place
- Benefits tiered storage implementations
Legacy Tray Support
For CSM100, CSM200, FLC200 SATA, FLA300 SBOB FC. This allows customers to re-use and re-purpose their existing investment, reducing total cost of ownership.
End of Life
Specific low volume Sun Storage 6140 and Specific Sun Storage CSM200 DC configuration are reaching their end of life (EOL). Last order date is September 11, 2009 with a last ship date scheduled for December 11, 2009. Contact Sun for more information on the specific configurations.
