quick start guide to installing and configuring Apache HTTP Web Server

The quick start guide Deploying Apache HTTP Web Server on Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems (a Sun BluePrints Online document; login or registration required) by Hasham Pathan explains not only how to install the Apache HTTP Web Server but also how to invoke Web services from the storage appliance. The document includes scenarios designed to aid consolidation efforts and simplify management.

Pathan recommends that readers look into individual organizational requirements before considering the described solutions or other deployment options to see if additional product features can be of value. Otherwise, readers might overlook such Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System capabilities as snapshots, cloning, and replication, which can often further enhance infrastructure deployments.

The configuration Pathan used to test procedures consisted of two Sun Fire X4200 servers connected to a Sun Storage 7210 Unified Storage System via a 1 Gigabit Ethernet network. Each server was configured with two dual-core AMD Opteron processors and two internal 72 GB hard disk drives, and each ran the Solaris 10 Operating System 08/07 release. The Sun Storage 7210 Unified Storage System itself housed 48 SATA disk drives, each providing 500 GB capacity. Pathan used the 48 disks to create a single 24 TB volume.

Pathan details the steps he used in configuring the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems and the Solaris 10 OS for NFS access. He notes that all the steps were run as the root user, except as otherwise indicated.

On the assumption that pre-installed software versions sometimes do not meet all user requirements, Pathan includes instructions on how to build and install the Apache HTTP Web Server software. He notes that detailed information on building and installing the software is available at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/install.html.

Pathan next provides the steps necessary to configure Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems as the repository for software binaries and Web content. He does so in order that users may run multiple instances of the Apache HTTP Web Server from different client systems, where the client systems share the software binaries and the Web server content deployed on the file system that is located on the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems. By having the DocumentRoot and the binaries in a centralized storage location, he writes, binary and Web content maintenance is simplified.

At this point, Pathan provides the steps required to configure the environment to run multiple instances of the Apache HTTP Web Server from different systems that point to a separate DocumentRoot yet use shared binaries. In this case, he notes, Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems can be used to store and share the binaries across Web server instances to simplify the maintenance of multiple copies of the software. It is also possible to create an area on the storage system to host the Web server content for different Web server instances, he adds.

The author suggests that users employ the version of the Apache HTTP Web Server that is shipped with the Solaris 10 Operating System, and store Web server content on the Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage Systems, providing the steps necessary to determine the status of the Apache HTTP Web Server that is typically included with the Solaris 10 OS.
