JavaFX 1.2 SDK

The June release of JavaFX 1.2 also brought with it new features to its SDK. There are changes in existing packages, the API, the variable names, etc. Mohammed Sanaulla focuses on a few major updates, namely: javafx.scene.layout packages, javafx.stage, UI Control and Chart Components and new packages javafx.io, javafx.date and javafx.util.

Pac-Man and JavaFX Tutorial

Haining Henry Zhang has published a five-part series of articles on the O'Reilly InsideRIA site titled "Writing the Pac-Man Game in JavaFX." It serves as a tutorial of sorts on JavaFX. Key features of the JavaFX language covered include binding, animation, transformation, Java class integration and multiple inheritant.

  • In Part 1, Haining outlines the logical and data structure behind his implementation of the game.
  • Part 2 tackles some of the Pac-Man animation requirements, including chomping.
  • Part 3 brings in programming the Pac-Man ghosts.
  • Part 4 provides the interactions between the Pac-Man and the ghosts, basically delineating which one is permitted to eat the other.
  • Part 5 explores algorithms to implement different behaviors for the ghosts.

UI Controls in JavaFX 1.2

Sergey Malenkov created an example showing all the node-based UI controls that have been added to the API to replace the controls based on the Swing library. In his example, Malenkov uses and explains the following: ScrollPane and performance, ScalePane and the Application class.
