Updated PDF of "c0t0d0s0: Less Known Solaris Features"

Joerg Moellenkamp has published an update to his PDF book, which contains short tutorials on less-known features in Solaris. The 333-page compilation are of Moellenkamp's blog postings that describe some of the Solaris features that are not widely known. He describes his publication as a supplement to the Solaris man pages and docs.sun.com. This verison, 0.52, contains information on Crossbow, he notes in his blog and are divided into the following sections: Solaris Administration; Solaris Security, Networking; Storage, Solaris Administrators Toolbox; and Nontechnical feature.

Bandwidth Limiting and Flow Accounting with Crossbow

Moellenkamp also recently explained how to use the Crossbow stack features bandwidth limiting, when you want to limit the amount of network traffic, and flow accounting. Visit his blog for the details. Interested visitors may also want to see his Part 1 entry on Crossbow that focuses on virtualization.

End-of-Software Support Statements

This list, hosted on the BigAdmin Web site, provides information on end-of-software support up to the Solaris 10 05/09 release. It covers features removed from Solaris 10, features that might be removed in future releases and links to previous end-of-software support announcements for Solaris 9 9/05, Solaris 8 (SPARC Platform Edition) 2/04 and Solaris 8 (Intel Platform Edition) 2/02.

I/O Analysis using DTrace

Users interested in solving I/O performance issues can observe how I/O are carried out by the operating system and related drivers via the open sourced Solaris DTrace set of tools. Senthil Ramanujam explains that DTrace allows analysis of real or simulated workloads, of arbitrary complexity. He offers an analysis of an Oracle database table similar to a fact table in a data warehousing environment.

Did you know that some freeware that is included with the Solaris 10 OS is supported by Sun? A list of freeware that is supported by Sun, as well as others that are shipped with Solaris 10 OS and not Sun supported, are available in a table on the Sun site.

UltraSPARC running Solaris 10 Supports Multiple Versions of PSRs

Platform-specific routine (PSR) libraries have been extended to the chip multithreading (CMT) UltraSPARC processor-based systems running the Solaris 10 OS. Abhinandan Ekande writes that the PSR capability has been extended to support multiple versions of platform-specific routines: one per processor, per platform, allowing a platform to support multiple processors, and each processor can be optimally utilized.
