SAS zoning or the SAS domain access configuration feature is part of the recent release of the Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager (CAM) Version 6.4.1. With this feature, users can now control which hosts have access to specific disks inside a Sun Storage Expansion Array. CAM software provides a common way to manage Sun Storage and StorageTek branded storage array devices.
CAM v 6.4.1 adds access configuration or the SAS Zoning functionality for the Sun Storage J4200, J4400 and J4500 Storage Arrays. This version of CAM is strongly recommended for the Sun StorageTek 6000, 2500 and FLX240 / FLX280 / FLX380 products.
This recent release is also recommended for RAID array users, especially those using the Sun StorageTek 2500 arrays and array firmware 7.x or later, mentions Owen Hall III on his blog. He also makes two additional points that he states are important about this release:
- 1) For Sun StorageTek 2500 users: Firmware Upgrade Utility 07.35.xx.xx must be run first before upgrading to the latest firmware included with CAM 6.4.1
- 2) For Sun Storage Expansion Array users: To centralize the management of multiple arrays which may be connected to multiple direct attached hosts, during the installation of the entire CAM installation kit choose the "in-band proxy agent only" option for any hosts that are not designated to be the centralized CAM management station. The centralized CAM management station will require the "full" distribution to be installed.
Besides the introduction of access configuration or zoning support, users will be able to select specific device plug-ins for CAM installation as an option and save space by installing software relevant to their specific configuration. A typical or full installation is always an option, of course.
CAM software is translated into Japanese, French and Simplified Chinese.
