offer significantly larger storage capacity and performance with SAS, SATA and flash-based Solid State Disks (SSD)

Sun Fire X4170, X4270 and X4275 are part of Sun's new family of servers based on the Intel Xeon 5500 series processors. These new servers are best suited for large enterprises as well as for sophisticated small and medium businesses (SMB).

Sun Fire X4170 server is an enterprise class x64 server that can power the demanding mission-critical back office applications. It comes in a compact, space and energy efficient 1RU form factor. Best price/performance.

  • 1RU form factor
  • Sun Fire X4150 follow on
  • 8 2.5-inch hot-swappable disk drive slots:

* Internal disk option: SAS HDD or SATA HDD (SATA is post RR) or SSD * Up to 4 TB storage (4TB with 500 GB SATA drives available in the near future) * Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA for HW RAID 0, 1, 1E, 5, 5EE, 6, 10, 50 and 60

  • Expansion bus: three PCIe 2.0 slots -- one x16 electrical/x16 mechanical, two x8 electrical/x8 mechanical:

* 32 lanes of PCIe 2.0 for a total throughput of 256 Gb/sec.

  • Five USB 2.0 ports (two rear, two front, one internal)
  • Dual Hot-swap redundant 750W PSUs with power sharing
  • DVD +/-RW (SATA based)

Sun Fire X4270 server is a enterprise server for application virtualization or it can serve as a virtual desktop infrastructure server in branch office and departmental settings or for moderate complexity data center consolidation needs. It has large memory, I/O and internal storage footprints making it ideally suited for virtualization. Best virtualization server in its class.

  • 2RU form factor
  • Sun Fire X4250 follow on
  • Supports up to 16 2.5-inch hot-swappable disk drives: * SAS HDD or SATA HDD or SSD * Up to 8 TB storage (8TB with 500 GB SATA drives available in the near future) * Sun StorageTek SAS HBA for basic HW RAID 0,1,1E * Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA for HW RAID 0, 1, 1E, 5, 5EE, 6, 10, 50 and 60

  • Expansion bus: Six PCIe 2.0 slots (all are x8-lane electrical/mechanical)
  • Five USB 2.0 ports (two rear, two front, one internal)
  • Dual Hot-swap redundant 1050W PSUs with power sharing
  • DVD+/-RW (SATA based)

Sun Fire X4275 server is a storage server that can drive the next near-line storage solution -- be it for digital media solutions or for data driven decision using data warehousing applications. Best storage server in its class.

  • 2RU form factor
  • Supports up to 12 3.5-inch hot-swappable disk drives:

* 12 disk drive slots that can support SAS or SATA HDD or SSD * Up to 12 TB storage (24TB in the near future) * Sun StorageTek SAS HBA for basic HW RAID 0,1,1E * Sun StorageTek SAS RAID HBA for HW RAID 0, 1, 1E, 5, 5EE, 6, 10, 50 and 60

  • Expansion bus: Six PCIe Gen 2 slots (all x8-lane electrical/mechanical)
  • Three USB 2.0 ports (two rear, one internal)
  • Dual Hot-swap redundant 1050W PSUs with power sharing
  • no DVD

The new Sun x64 servers deliver up to double the number of compute threads (16 Hyper-Threads), more than double the memory to 144 GB of memory (post RR with 8 GB DIMMs; 72 GB at RR), more than double the offered memory speeds to 1333 MHz, resulting in more than double the maximum memory bandwidth of 42.6 GB/s, double I/O bandwidth with PCIe Gen 2 and offer significantly larger storage capacity and performance with SAS, SATA and flash-based Solid State Disks (SSD).

Equipped with hot swap redundant power supplies, hot swap redundant fans and hot swap hard drives or SSDs that are front accessible, the new servers come standard with Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM) Service Processor that offers industry standard protocols for standalone system manageability or integration with many industry leading management systems such as HP Openview or IBM Tivoli and Sun's xVM Ops Center.

The on-board 16 GB compact flash option is ideal for embedded diagnostic tools, 'safe boot images,' lower power, specific security measures and virtualization.

Side-band management on the Sun X4170, X4270, and X4275 allows users to access the ILOM on the service processor via one of the 4 on-board Ethernet ports instead of requiring the dedicated management port on SP to be connected

The following I/O ports for these servers:

  • Four 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet (RJ45 Connector)
  • RS-232 Serial Interface (R J45 Connector)
  • Sun Fire X4170 and X4270: five USB 2.0 ports (two rear, two front, one internal)
  • Sun Fire X4275: three USB 2.0 ports (two rear, one internal)
  • Video Port (analog HD 15 VGA Connector)
  • VGA video and KVM over IP support
  • Sun Fire X4170: 1x 16 electrical/mechanical, 2 x8 electrical
  • Sun Fire X4270 and X4275: 6x 8-lane PCI-Express slots with x8 connectors)
