Sun BluePrint: "Running Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) on Sun Logical Domains"
June 19, 2009,
Volume 136, Issue 3

This paper presents an example configuration of the production variant, with Oracle RAC nodes placed in LDoms on two separate physical servers

Read this Sun BluePrints for running Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) on servers set up with Sun Logical Domains (LDoms). Learn about implementing a solution that runs in both development and production environments. Imagine virtualization technology available that comes with Sun LDoms that allows the creation of multiple virtual systems. However, these LDoms run on a single physical system. With this technology, users can set up the fine-grained assignment of CPU and memory resources to an Oracle RAC workload.

Give this platform a boost with the 256 threads per system that are available with Sun's CoolThreads technology-based servers. Users benefit from this powerful platform for development and production setups. From a development point of view, users have multiple Oracle RAC nodes that can be installed on the same physical server to reduce hardware costs. Then, with increased availability, each Oracle node can be placed on a separate physical server which benefits production environment setups.

Each section of the paper provides critical information for setting up RAC on LDoms. Review the introduction for an overview and discussion of RAC on LDoms and the options users may choose for deployment. Browse through the list of firmware and software requirements as well as the hardware configuration for examples of how to configure your system. More details on the steps to install and configure, using a sample configuration are provided in the "Software installation and configuration", "Network configuration", and "Storage configuration" sections. This BluePrints also includes supplemental information for performance considerations and known issues.

"This paper presents an example configuration of the production variant, with Oracle RAC nodes placed in LDoms on two separate physical servers. Step-by-step instructions describe the complete configuration process, including LDoms creation and configuration, networking setup, and storage configuration," write Chartre, Dibbets & Ivanov.
